| Poetry Workshops for Carers |
We recommend the idea of running poetry workshops for Carers. (The word "Carer" is now used by the care services to denote people who - in a non-professional capacity - carry most of the burden of supporting someone with a disability. The person identified as the carer is usually a family member, such as parent, spouse or child. Sometimes, though, the person is a friend, even just a neighbour.)
No doubt, other artistic forms of expression besides poetry can also be helpful. But a recent experience of running a series of poetry workshops for carers over a period of about two years has left the participants with a way of expressing, of standing apart from, of shaping their enourmously difficult experience, so that they feel less oppressed and overwhelmed, less unheard and isolated.
The workshops received King's Fund financial support and participants now offer an hour-long performance of a selection of the work produced. We have performed it several times. Anyone else interested in booking the performance contact us. We have also produced a small booklet of the poems.
We can supply this free, but would have to charge postage.
