Hyphen-21 backs proposal for a code of professional practice for service user consultation.

The Practitioners Forum
Care organisations are now required to consult with service users and their carers on the quality of services, both present and planned.

Less obvious, but just as crucial, is the obligation of service managers to include their staff in thinking about policy and practice. This is clearly stated as a requirement in the Government paper "Working Together."

It also stands to reason that as a manager you would wish to hear from people working directly at the face. Not just so that they will feel valued, but because the level of experience and expertise available there is indispensable for all monitoring and all planning.

But too often, work pressures, the Command-style management still prevalent in many care organisations, the Blame culture still prevalent everywhere, all conspire to deny a voice and a platform to the practitioner at ground level.

Attached is a proposal for a Practitioners Forum, not just as a source of mutual support but as a consultative body.

At one stage the charity saw this proposal as its main focus, with a view to promoting the idea that there should be a Forum in each area, "Communities of Endurance" around the country, promoting good practice, acting together as a loose-knit network of ground-level expertise, sharing ideas and experiences. It may yet happen. This web-site could a station for it.
